Lutein and Zeaxanthin

Lutein and Zeaxanthin are carotenoids which can be found in high quantities in green leafy vegetables. Out of 30 carotenoids found in the human body, only these two are present in lens and retina. They are found mostly in the central region of the retina and are also called macular pigment. They work as antioxidants and also limit the retinal oxidative damage by quenching reactive oxygen and absorbing the blue light that falls on the retina. The higher levels of these antioxidants, when acquired, can diminish the risk of nuclear cataract. Some dietary foods that contain these antioxidants are Kale, spinach, Brussels sprouts and other leafy vegetables.
